Student opportunities

TXST Galleries offers students opportunities to gain professional experience and training through student employment and Art History internships. Students support exhibitions, public programs, and daily operations while learning how a university art gallery functions as part of a professional arts organization. Students work closely with the Director, Gallery Coordinator, and staff in the School of Art & Design while developing professional skills related to exhibitions, visitor engagement, and gallery operations.

These opportunities provide valuable experience for students interested in museums, galleries, curatorial work, arts administration, and cultural institutions. The experience may also support students’ own research projects, preparation for graduate study, and exploration of careers in areas such as curatorial work, museum education, public programs, art handling, and event management.

Applications for Fall 2026 positions open April 13, 2026, and will be reviewed on a rolling basis until positions are filled.

Student Employment

Gallery Monitors

Gallery Monitors provide front-of-house coverage for TXST Galleries, welcoming visitors, stewarding artwork on view, and supporting exhibitions, programs, and events. This position provides professional experience with gallery operations and visitor engagement.

Most students begin their work with the Galleries as Gallery Monitors. Hiring and training are coordinated by Director Dr. Sarah Kleinman.

Gallery Monitor positions are paid student employment roles open to Texas State students in good academic standing. Work-Study students are also encouraged to apply. Students typically work 4–12 hours per week, depending on availability and gallery needs.

Installation Crew

Installation Crew members assist with exhibition installation and deinstallation, including art handling, lighting, artwork placement, and gallery preparation. This work provides professional experience and training for students interested in museum preparation, exhibition design, and art handling.

Installation Crew members positions are filled through the Gallery Monitor application process. Students are typically selected from among experienced Gallery Monitors who demonstrate interest and aptitude for exhibition installation. Training is coordinated by Associate Director Rebecca Marino.

Students who are particularly interested in exhibition installation or art handling are encouraged to apply for Gallery Monitor positions and indicate their interest and any relevant experience in their cover letter and resume. Relevant experience might include studio practice, fabrication, woodworking, sculpture, photography, lighting, or other hands-on work with artworks or materials.

Art History Internships (ARTH 4325)

TXST Galleries is one of several organizations where students may complete the ARTH 4325 Art History Internship course at Texas State University.

Interns gain professional experience with gallery operations and front-of-house responsibilities while also developing projects related to art historical and exhibition research, interpretation, and curatorial practice. Projects may include research, writing, and other work tailored to the student’s interests and skills.

Interns work a minimum of 9 hours per week. The internship is completed for academic credit through enrollment in ARTH 4325.

Students interested in completing their internship at TXST Galleries should review the Art History Internship information in the Canvas course for Art History Majors and Minors. Before applying, students should contact the current Art History Area Coordinator, who oversees registration for ARTH 4325.
