Video-choreographer Ana Baer Carrillo creates site-responsive screendance that explores relationships among body, landscape, memory, and place. Working through her collaborative practices Alebrije Collective and WECreate Productions, Baer brings together choreography, moving image, and sound to create immersive installations that transform the gallery into an environment for embodied viewing.

Latent Spaces: Embodied Geographies is a site-specific, multi-channel digital video installation presenting screendance works by Baer Carrillo created in collaboration with Alebrije Collective (Gallery 1) and WECreate Productions (Gallery 2). The installation’s immersive soundscapes were developed in collaboration with composer and sound designer Richard D. Hall, who combines ambient location recordings captured by Baer Carrillo with original musical compositions to create synchronized audiovisual environments that extend the choreographic experience across multiple large-scale projections.

Throughout these bodies of work, Baer Carrillo approaches landscapes—whether ecological or urban—as choreographic partners.

about THE ARTIST

Ana Baer Carrillo is a video-choreographer whose practice encompasses screendance, interdisciplinary performance, and choreography. Her work explores embodiment, place, and site-specificity through movement created for both the camera and live performance. 

Baer Carrillo is Professor of Dance at Texas State University and a founding member of the university’s Merge Dance Company. Since 2004, she has served as Artistic Co-Director of the international Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema in Boulder, Colorado. She co-founded WECreate Productions with dance artist and scholar Dr. Heike Salzer in 2014 and Alebrije Collective with choreographer and scholar Dr. Rocío Luna in 2018, extending her commitment to transcultural collaboration and interdisciplinary artistic research. 

Her work has been commissioned by the John Cage Foundation; Stadttheater Gießen and Tanzcompagnie Gießen in Germany; Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo and Contra-Danza México A.C. in Mexico; Performance Inventions in France; and the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. 

Baer Carrillo holds a Master of Arts in Dance with an emphasis in video from the University of Colorado Boulder, a Certificate in Dance Teaching from the Royal Academy of Dance in London, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Choreography from the Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico.
