Projection mapping pop-up exhibition
ARTC 4319 DESIGN FOR EXPERIENCES STUDENTS
APRIL 6 – 8
For this project, small groups of 2–3 students in ARTC 4319: Design for Experiences will develop and design a motion graphic Data Portrait that explores an aspect of San Marcos—its culture, environment, or community identity. Each team will translate their research into a projection-mapped video installation, transforming data into a visually engaging and conceptually rich narrative experience.
Through the Data Portrait assignment, students will index the city according to at least three defined metrics to tell a story about a place. They will develop a systematic visual language that reveals both factual insights and cultural impressions, reflecting on how local context shapes visual aesthetics and meaning.
This pop-up exhibition is the culmination of the students’ projection-mapping installations as a collective exploration of data, design, and place. The show functions as an exercise in exhibition design, branding, and experiential storytelling, highlighting the unique creative vision of the design students. Through the installation event—and potential artist talks or demos—students will contribute to the vibrant educational and creative dialogue fostered by the FL3X.
ARTC 4319: Design for Experiences addresses the creation of user experiences informed by research, customer empathy, experience mapping, and design thinking. Projects involve creating research and problem framing documents, user flow and system diagrams, pattern libraries, and experience prototypes. Students also study design and innovation roles at enterprise-scale companies and independent consultancies.
